The existing Hubli-Madgaon line faces limitations due to steep inclines near the Tinaighat region, leading to fewer trains operating on it. Therefore, the Ankola-Hubli line is now prioritized. The plan is to establish Ankola as a major station, connecting it to Hubli and Mumbai through railway lines. This project has been stalled for 20 years due to environmental clearances and court cases. After a fresh survey, efforts are underway to revive the project. The new design will be presented to the National Wildlife Board this month. The project is expected to gain momentum with V. Sommanna, MP from Tumkur, Karnataka, now serving as the Railway Minister. The railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has confirmed the development of a new design for the Hubli-Ankola line in the Lok Sabha. This line will be a double-track line. The Ministry of Railways had earlier assured the Karnataka High Court that it would reconsider the project. They have also assured the court that they will comply with the directives of the National Wildlife Board. Construction of earthwork and bridges has been completed for the 47-kilometer Hubli-Kiranvatti section. Further progress requires permission from the Union Ministry of Forests as the line passes through 569 hectares of forest land, some of which are subject to legal disputes. Due to the line passing through the Black Tiger Project, it is being realigned.
